Q4: What size motor can a 5.5kW drive control? What is the difference between light-overload and heavy-duty?
A: The ACS800-01-0011-3 has rated output current 11A, and the motor power it can control depends on load type and overload requirements.
What size motor can a 5.5kW drive control?
- Light-overload application: can control 5.5kW motor (motor rated current approx. 11-12A)
- Suitable for variable torque loads such as fans, pumps, centrifugal compressors
- Overload capability: typically 110% overload for 60 seconds, 150% for 3 seconds
- Heavy-duty application: can control 4kW motor (motor rated current approx. 8-9A)
- Suitable for constant torque/heavy-duty loads such as conveyors, mixers, crushers, hoists, extruders
- Overload capability: typically 150% overload for 60 seconds, 180% for 3 seconds
- Notes:
- Drive selection mainly depends on motor rated current, not motor power, because motors with different pole numbers and efficiencies may have different rated currents at the same power.
- It is recommended that drive rated output current ≥ motor rated current × 1.1 (leave 10% margin).
- If motor rated current is close to or exceeds drive rated current, it is recommended to select the next larger drive.
- For specific selection, it is recommended to provide motor nameplate parameters (power, current, voltage, pole number, load type), and we can help confirm.
What is the difference between light-overload and heavy-duty?
- Light-overload (also called Normal Duty, ND):
- Definition: small load variation, short overload time, low overload multiple
- Typical loads: fans, pumps, centrifugal compressors and other variable torque loads
- Overload capability: 110% rated current for 60 seconds, 150% for 3 seconds
- At the same drive rated current, light-overload can control larger power motors
- Advantages: high drive utilization, lower cost
- Heavy-duty (also called High Duty, HD):
- Definition: large load variation, long overload time, high overload multiple
- Typical loads: conveyors, mixers, crushers, hoists, extruders, ball mills and other constant torque/heavy-duty loads
- Overload capability: 150% rated current for 60 seconds, 180% for 3 seconds
- At the same drive rated current, heavy-duty can only control smaller power motors
- Advantages: strong overload capability, suitable for impact loads and heavy-duty starting
- Selection recommendations:
- If unsure about load type, it is recommended to select by heavy-duty, leave sufficient margin, safer and more reliable.
- Fan and pump type loads can be selected by light-overload to save cost.
- Hoists, crushers and other heavy-duty loads must be selected by heavy-duty, and if necessary, select one size larger.
Q5: In stock? Lead time? Price?
